There are many worthwhile publications on Medium, but it can be tricky to find one that’s mutually suitable.

Some either consider themselves terribly important — or are perhaps just really understaffed — and expect you to wait a week or more for a response.

Some require very low standards of grammar and spelling of their writers and seem to let anyone at all through the door.

And some are simply the wrong niche for your work.

Anybody who knows me knows I have all or nothing tendencies. I love it, or it bores me to tears. I eat the whole bar, or don’t bother to buy it. I’ll log in fifteen times a day for months then avoid it altogether for the same time frame. I’ve been known to listen to the same song on a loop for weeks — a niece once was treated to The Doobie Brothers “Listen To The Music” for…

Is To Move Continents

You lose a lot when you move away across continents, but you don’t measure the loss all at once. You don’t realise how much you’ve given away in your quest for a richer, more interesting and less predictable life. Until one day you do.

You lose your homeland, your roots, the ability to be understood when you make colloquial jokes. You lose touch with family and friends — digital catch-ups are good, but they can’t take the place…

Love versus the Greyhound Industry

Sometimes our greyhound tests my love. Sometimes our greyhound is extremely frustrating, not to say annoying. But no matter, I can’t help but love him. And I guess that’s the difference between humans and the people who torture greyhounds for fun and profit.

I realised for certain I love him, despite him doing his best to drive me mad, on the morning he tried to jump on his (temporarily) dodgy leg and it gave way under him. He…

First, may I say I love this idea for a publication, and love being able to draw your attention to some genuinely talented writers on Medium. This won’t be my last writer’s review.

Simon Dillon is always the first with a kind word, a clap and an engaging comment, which is why I’ve chosen his work first.

From memory, my first chat with Mr Dillon was on the Argumentative Penguin’s comment section. …

There’s a reason I sometimes use “Lost in three continents” as my tag line — and I’m not talking metaphorically.

The story of my reluctant and dysfunctional relationship with motor vehicles begins some years ago in sunny So Cal. At the ripe old age of 26, finally forced to submit to a driving test, I capitulated to the reality that first I was going to need some lessons.

Paul, a long-ago ex-boyfriend and generally fairly patient chap, was…

This lady no longer writes on Medium, but fortunately I was also following her on Twitter so was able to track her down to her Substack.

She’s funny and much smarter than you or me. I mean, I know she’s smarter than me and I’m smarter than most of you, so I’m just assuming.*

She’s no idea I’m writing this, we’re not friends, I don’t know her at all outside of the articles I’ve read. …

In the 17 months since I first wrote “Learn critical analysis and use it in your comments” at least 75% of commenters who disagree with my stance on something have been people whose reading comprehension skills are low and puzzling entitlement high.

Why is it so hard to simply reply to what someone has SAID? …

Rant follows:

I’m sick to the back teeth of reading the ignorant venting of sanctimonious shitlarks* shrieking their own tedious, vapid bigotry and calling it progress.

When you state that any specific and determinable group of people: white, black, men, women, the French, the Tories or Labour, Democrats or Republicans, Queenslanders, Celtic Fans, feminists (you get the idea) are “Insert your choice of insult and slur here” you are projecting your own failures and personal challenges onto them.
