Absurd Advice To Be Ignored

Image from free from copyright

If you frequent this site more than occasionally, you’ll doubtless have seen swaggers of bloggers dispensing pearls of ignorance which they fondly imagine is writing advice.

Or, if you’re me, you’ll spot their titles, subtitles and occasionally the first line of whatever they’re endorsing before rolling your eyes and clicking away.

One piece of particularly pointless advice, oft repeated, is to find a niche and plug away at it.

Whether that’s good advice for money making or not, I do not know.

But what I do know is that it’s useless advice for writers. You might as…

The truth about women’s sex drives

Image by Calibra from Pixabay, copyright free

Women may be even more sexual than men, which probably comes as a shock to most of you. Generations of media mythology and contradictory urban legends, sometimes powered by male insecurities, are smothering the truth.

Please don’t make lazy assumptions about women’s sexuality based on what they’re allowed to do, or feel safe doing. and our entire culture is littered with of what happens to women who dare to be sexual, or . for women.

Instead, let’s rationally examine the assumptions clouding the…

Dead Men Cannot Defend Themselves

I remember being deeply disappointed about twenty years ago when I discovered one of my favourite actors had made an appalling declaration about hitting women. I’ve struggled with competing feelings of respect for his acting abilities and distaste at his personal behaviours ever since. He was nothing short of brilliant in Robin and Marian, breathed new life to King Arthur in First Knight, and also gave an amazing death bed performance in that same movie, and was nuanced and subtle in The Hunt For Red October. I could go on. …

A Fine Romance

Have you ever wandered down memory lane humming along to tunes from your childhood and then stopped to consider the lyrics? For your listening pleasure, here are ten songs my brain ruined for me, which I thought I’d besmirch for you, too.

Hey lady, you lady, with the extra-wide hips and the early onset wrinkles? Before I head back to my private jet, I just had the need to humblebrag. Watching you wipe crud off your kid, I had a flutter of anxiety about not having a mortgage and a cheating…

All Three Articles In One Place

Cure is too strong a word, but how I stabilised and greatly improved my mental and physical health doesn’t pack the same punch.

Due to the complex nature of this true story, I have had to write it in three parts. I decided it might be helpful to collect all three articles in one place for easy reference.

Part 1

Gives an overview of my life long mental health issues and offers some insight into how very unwell I have been. I felt this was necessary so I don’t come across as a clueless self helper…

The Five Pillars Of Medium

Image by from free for commercial use

New writers to this site are often concerned with how to gain traction and increase followers, likes and claps. Inevitably they’re hoping to make cold hard cash. As a positivity coach and lifestyle advisor (to be clear, I am neither of those things) I do so enjoy helping people reach their potential (I really don’t), so here are some helpful hints from a seasoned Medium aficionado.

Since Medium disproportionately represents wealthy, clueless synthetic leftist neoliberals and conceited narcissists utterly divorced from the concerns of genuine left wing, working class and average people, you should try to fit…

Everyone knows that cancel culture exists.

Simply type in cancel culture harm and instantly you will be rewarded with dozens and dozens of links giving specific instances of people who have been materially harmed by cancel culture. You will find stories of doxxing, threats, job loss, suicidal ideation and more. It’s very easy to find the actual names of real people who have had their lives ruined by cancel culture.

Cancel Culture is mob rule writ large, and we all know this.

So what’s behind the refusal from some to admit it even exists?

Well, it seems…

Recap

After a lifetime of mental health challenges, I found myself getting worse in my late 40s. Due to the length and complexity of this subject, I have had to write it in three parts. You can find .

Cure is too strong a word. But how I stabilised and reduced my mental and physical suffering just doesn’t pack the same punch.

Part 3 — The Second Breakthrough

Eating with the enemy

This is NOT an eat well be well lecture. I was already eating more fruit and vegetables than I had in my entire life at this point, and to no avail.

My eating…

I Don’t Suffer Fools At All

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay free from copyright

Every now and then, an imbecile will pop up in my replies to do what imbeciles do — complain about something I didn’t say, ignore what I did actually say, add a strawman or two, say something about a topic they think I should be addressing, use an ad hom or other logical fallacy and then slink off, smirking.

They’ve fallen for the fable that women, particularly middle-aged women, are an easy target. These same trolls — and they’re of both sexes — rarely approach men in this fashion, because they would expect to be slapped down…
